The Semicolon Project created a semicolon tattoo as a part of a campaign dedicated to presenting hope and love for those who are struggling with depression, suicide, addiction and self-injury. This has been imbibed by several people as a reminder that whatsoever is the reason behind getting tattoo is not giving opportunity to defeat . My take on this subject is that this could be a means to an end for people who have to daily deal with lives challenges of whatever they are going through especially people with medical challenges, to be able to put a semicolon to it and move on with life not letting their challenges affect other parts of their lives. Helping people to be able to forge ahead despite challenges could be a way of letting them know that they still have a reason of moving on despite what they have to deal with on a daily basis. For some, its a reminder of a loss they had to deal with, while for some it is a sign of encouragement not to give up the battle they are presently fighting but whatever the semicolon sign represent to each individual that got it, the main goal is to help the society break down any stigma associated especially with mental illness. With this semicolon tattoo,it is a great solace to know that you are not at the end no matter how tough whatever you are experiencing now may be.

From reading this article, I found that the trendy semicolon tattoo is an interesting way to raise awareness on depression, anxiety, and suicide by symbolizing as a ‘promise to never end my own sentence’. For some people, they can project their life circumstances and reflect on this visual reminder to continue forward in life. This semicolon tattoo can act as an undoing defense mechanism for individuals who are dealing with emotional conflict or stressors as a way to symbolically make amends for unacceptable thoughts, feelings, or actions. For example, the thought of suicide is trying to be reversed by performing an action like a tattoo of a semicolon that implies the opposite of ending one’s life. I find that raising awareness for a mental illness is great form of individual behavioral therapy but exactly how long will a movement like this last. Will people join in and get a tattoo because it is the ‘trendy’ thing to do or will this actually make an impact and save some individual’s future life?

The Semicolon Project is a new and innovative way of looking at the stigma that is mental illness. Anything that gives people hope and a way to fight through something like mental illness is a positive step to how society interprets mental illness in the future. The idea of a semicolon versus anything else gives the people struggling through these issues a reason to keep going. It is a symbol that represents a second chance and that life can get better. This project is a good idea because it not only reaches the mentally ill, but the ones around them as well. It sheds light on how important a little tattoo can bring such hope to ones who are suffering. Tattoos have been a popular thing to get in years and to capitalize on this popular activity and use it to promote something as stigmatized as mental illness is not only beneficial to society, but genius.

The semicolon Project is a great idea to help those struggling with depression, suicide, addition or self-injury. Wearing a tattoo is comforting letting them know they are not alone in their struggle and many people have been in their shoes. It helps people not be ashamed and this way are able to correctly treat their mental illness. This movement is helping people be more understanding and compassionate so that when they do come across somebody with mental illness they can help those in need. Tattoos mean different things to different people but for the most part it tells a story of triumph and overcoming personal obstacles. Depression and mental health problems are more common than we think and its great people are being educated about it.

The semicolon tattoo meaning: states that the optional semicolon continues a sentence rather than ending one like an abrupt period. therefore each human being is the author that chooses to keep the sentence(going) on. Many individuals struggling with depression , self-harm and other ailments can embrace the semicolon. they can relate to the sentence-ending (life-ending) period, too. Suicide is the 10th most common cause of death in the country . even though such a preventable cause of death should be fought against , we remain silent on the issue . Few individuals that suffer from mental health problems see medical attention. In the beginning they don't want other to see them struggle. An admission of the problem make them feel weak, thus the tattoo project raise awareness without the potential embarrassment the person may feel.

One in four U.S. adults is suffering from diagnosable mental health disorder in a given year (1). Knowing this, it seems to be strange that we do not hear much about mental health disorders in our everyday conversations. We tell each other when we catch a cold, when we break a leg or even develop heart disease and diabetes. But you rarely hear people telling each other that they have developed major depression or bipolar disorder! Considering this, projects like the semicolon project seem to be very promising. These types of projects aim to increase awareness and reduce stigma of mental health disease. I hope these projects will change our attitude towards mental health so that we end up talking more about it. 1) www.techtimes.com/articles/7628/20140527/1-4-u-s-adults-suffer-diagnosable-mental-disorder-given.htm

Suicide is one of the top listed causes of preventable death. I have read about semicolon project on Facebook couple of weeks ago and I was impressed by the concept behind it. Psychiatric illness always had social stigma attached to it, people wear masks of happiness and still suffer inside. Getting medical treatment for a broken bone or heart attack is as equally important as getting treatment for depression and other psychiatric illnesses. When I was a kid I always thought committing suicide needs lot of courage, but I realized slowly that living life and overcoming all the hurdles that life throws at us and not giving up is what takes the courage. Most suicides are due to a hasty wrong decision, if we could make them pause and make them look at the bigger picture of life and make them realize it's not bad life but it's just a rough patch in their life and storm will clear soon, suicide rates will come down drastically, semicolon exactly symbolizes that. I am so glad that social media is being used in a positive way for increasing awareness among people about depression and suicide, to show people that there are thousands out there in the world just like them fighting depression and it is ok to seek help. Tattoo trend might fade away but the awareness created by that will not. I am waiting for a day when people don't get tagged as crazy or nuts when they try seeking psychiatric help, Hope the day isn't too far away.

It is interesting to know The Semicolon Project says its symbol represents a 'continuation' of life. The idea quickly took off with people sharing images of their newly-etched skin on social media, often alongside touching messages about their own battles with depression or to mark the loss of a loved one. It was also interesting to know that a semicolon tattoo can make a person believe that maybe a story isn’t over. This semicolon project seems very common in the world now. People have linked it to many complications, and it’s interesting to know how a tattoo of the symbol itself can give so much hope. Many of them said how it has made them overcome depression, and has made them see the other part of life. Which made me think is it the symbol only? Can think work on everyone?

The Semicolon Project is a revolutionary movement reuniting people who have either battled mental illness directly or indirectly because their family or friends have mental illnes. In today's society, we are ignorant to depth of mental illness and the effects on one's daily functioning. I thoroughly applaud this initiative because it uses a minor sentence symbol to encourage people to continue despite of the diagnosis. According to the website, the semi-colon means that "when another could've chosen to end their sentence, but chose not to." It further reminds anyone batting mental illness that the author is you and the sentence is your life. Moreover, it encourages people to move forward and they ultimately have complete control over their destiny in this fight against mental illness. Also, the symbolic tattoo that has unified people from all walks of life and shows solidarity at its finest form. When people know there are not alone, they feel more at peace with their condition because they know they are going to get through this with the company of people who share their same struggle. The Semicolon project is a unique movement that increases mental health awareness and unifies people in a beautiful way.

I have been a big fan of The Semi Colon project since the very first time I have heard about it last year. As an aspiring Psychiatrist, it gives me a sense of relief that depressed people and people with other mental health issues are coming out of their closets and expressing themselves. They are no longer insecure. They are finding support through projects like these. They could relate with other people with similar issues like themselves. That gives them a whole new dimension of looking at their mental health condition. It changes their whole perspective about themselves. They find it easier to get through the hardships they have fought with and almost ended up killing themselves but chose not to. With that very fact behind them, they begin to appreciate life as a gift that it is. Any depressed patient who ends up with suicide will not leave his or her psychiatrist with a very pleasant feeling. So, projects like these make our job easier; we get to enjoy support from patients themselves; with active participation from them, our job to make them get better will only get easier. I hope other projects come up too for Schizophrenia, PTSD, Addictions, and Bipolar disorder etc. It is only a matter of time.

Personally speaking, I think that Semicolon Project is an appealing and bright idea to introduce people into the unknown and stigmatic field of mental illnesses. From ancient time, psychiatric disorders have not always been welcomed by society. In truth, I have been involved in several discussions with people who dare say psychiatry is not a science and that people who suffer from mental illness just need to be positive. Of course I agree that positivism is one of the most important therapy to be successful in life however, what about disorders like schizophrenia, bipolar or others?. I am pretty sure that people who think like that have never lived with someone affected with a mental illness, and they don’t really know how tragic and difficult this can be. Therefore, I find that the Semicolon Project is not only a really innovative and original idea but also has an educational and informative purpose. On one hand, the semicolon sign has a significance by itself and it makes people think that there is always a fresh start after an end, there is always a future. I really like this message because it means that there are always goals to achieve and we should never give up in order to fulfill them. On the other hand, that message as a tattoo form can be spread widely from one person to thousands. People at first only see a tattoo, but the curiosity of seeing the same tattoo in different people will make them seek information and after some research they will find that is a deep significance in the tattoo. Thereby, it is not only helpful for patients to remember that there is always a start but also it is a chance to raise awareness of mental health in society.

Are we living in 21st century? I get this doubt when I think of how much social taboo there is about the psychiatric illness. It's like any other medical illness that needs treatment. Also there is much negative propaganda out there saying that psychiatry is all about medications which is am misconception. I really felt happy when I heard about semicolon project, which is persuading people to get semicolon tattoo on them to raise awareness about depression, anxiety, self-harm and suicide. We need to use the powerful social media as much as we can to eliminate all the taboo associated with psychiatric illnesses and I hope there won't be any in the near future.

The semicolon project is a nice sentiment and it brings attention to a serious but often overlooked problem facing millions of people in the world. Mental illness can completely debilitate a person and their family. A lot of time people think of mental illness as a disorder that can be treated with a pill, a few sessions of talking to a therapist, and everything is fixed. But the truth is that many of these conditions are lifelong battles that can rob a person of their life and make it seem like it isn’t worth living. The semicolon is a way for family and friends to show solidarity, or for the person fighting a condition that they will not be defeated, rather they will win by continuing to live their life.
