We never know what someone is going through in their life. We might look at someone and think they have everything in the world and that they have no reason to be depressed or upset for any reason. Every single person on this earth has their own strugggles in life and every single person on this earth responds in their own way. Justin Bieber is the perfect example. People look at his life and wish they were in his shoes and that would make them happy. If a person can’t be happy in his own shoes then a person can never be happy, in the words of J Cole “love yours.” There is a generation that idolizes Justin Bieber so if he goes and gets treatment for his depression and is public about it, maybe his “beliebers” also suffering from depression will realize no one is immune and how important it is to find help. At the end of the day its all about awareness and when such a high profile individual is open about his suffering and path towards treatment is shines light on an issue that was in the shadow for way too long.

Justin's situation is probably mirrored by many other celebrities - some due to lack of cognitive capacity, some due to a limited childhood - becoming a celebrity at a young age, some due to lack of a familial support system, some due to excessive recreational consumption. Justin spoke about his fluctuating relationship with his parents, his popularity at 14 years old, and his reliance on drugs/etoh. Another factor is the constant media bombardment many celebrities endure - this mainly due to the appetite of the general public. The public's prevalent desire to see a celebrity walk down the street, to evaluate their clothing, attempt to evaluate their state of mind based on a snapshot - all lead to a lucrative market for constant coverage. This leads to increased celebrity consciousness while doing the mundane tasks of putting gas in their car/buying a snack at the store. The nearly constant self evaluation can become detrimental. We may begin to routinely see these cases in younger celebrities - one possible reason being the increased desire for instant gratification which is more paramount among social media involved youth. Millions of fans who are instantly gratified by a single picture, a static glimpse into the life of a celebrity, yet no consequential gratification for the celebrity.

Depression hits everyone, regardless of SES. Being famous and rich does not give you protection from it. Let's remember Robert Williams and Jim Carrey, who both suffered from psych issues. Depression is debilitating and can be long lasting and can be a resultant of chronic stress. One should reach out and not be ashamed of it, since many resources are available to help you fight it. I believe JB, trying to find God and do better, places him in a phase were he is doing mental healing . Healing is different from curing. In the eastern world healing can be more beneficial than a cure because it puts a person in a right state of mind.

Depression is a major issue for general population. It is for sure something that we should be aware of and recognize. I do empathize with anyone one who has any kind of mental or physical health issues and I hope things work out for mister Bieber. However, I have an issue with people that choose certain life style knowing about possible outcomes and still engage in it. I don't have an empathy for some one who smoked whole life, abused alcohol, got them selves overweight, never worked out or watched their diet, never went to see PCP for annual exams and now coming in for help asking to fix them with all sorts of miracle treatments and magic pills. You've made choices along the way and now have to leave with consequences. I will help you but don't expect for me to have empathy. Mental issues are not exception. He got him self here by making choices, so no I don't feel bed for him. He is not the first one and not the last one. Zero contribution to society just self indulgence. And why he is talking to press about his issue and does interviews with magazines? I thought the issue was partially from public pressure and intrusiveness....you don't want attention, you want normal life, go away where no one knows who you are and build a new life with your wife. God knows your have means for it Mr. Bieber.

Good for Bieber and good for us for creating a culture where one can seek mental help. I was listening to Fresh Air on NPR and yesterday's guest was Judith Grisel. She is a neuroscientist and was discussing with host, Terry Gross, her new book "Never Enough: The Neuroscience and Experience of Addiction." She stated that drugs like alcohol and marijuana have more profound effect on young brain, that is before 25 yrs, than after. In the younger formative years the brain is more plastic and is busy laying down permanent structures; so in these younger years the brain under the influence of drugs lays a different circuitry than the brain that was not under the influence of drugs. Alcohol especially has been related to depression;It is a tiny molecule and affects different brain paths. It affects endorphins,dopamine;glutamate and GABA, the two primary excitatory and inhibitory neurotransmitters. Cocaine is much specific than alcohol;it blocks the recycling of dopamine and other neurotransmitters like norepinephrine, and that enhances pleasure and enhances arousal and enhances movement. Marijuana acts like both cocaine and alcohol; Specific in its action but floods the brain like alcohol. Bieber depression must have been heavily influenced by taking this drugs at an earlier age. As a Belieber I hope Justin gets well and back on the train. Almost all celebrities that get famous too young and too fast are at high risk for getting into drugs and losing their mind a little. The guy is younger than me (24) and already being mature enough to take a break from the spotlight and get professional help. I think this shows courage and I hope the best for him. As far as depression and his marriage are concerned I believe that everyone in life deals with depression at times. I also find that taking a step back from things that you do not absolutely need to be doing in life (i.e. going on tour for a year when you are worth a billion bucks or as for me, overextending myself voulenteering at the homeless shelter) can help you take some stresses out of your life than can help lead to lower depression levels. I am not sure how I feel about the no sex for a year thing with his new wife and how that can help their mental health.. And I agree with Felix above. He doesnt need to be getting more attention from telling everyone about his mental health issues, albeit it does show public awareness all over the world that even your most favorite singer/song writer can have mental health problems like the average Joe. However, if I had his money, I would take that beautiful new fiancee to some remote place in the Maldeeves for a couple years, enjoy myself romantically, and get back to choas after he is feeling he is up for it.

This is a fascinating topic I think. So many people think that celebrities don't deserve support or empathy because "they have everything" or they are famous, when in reality, having everything is probably the main problem. I always feel for young celebrities especially because the industry finds them young, and slowly strips their identity away and replaces it with what the producers think will sell albums. By the time they are adults, they don't know who they are or how to be a normal person. Sounds really hard. At the same time, I am always skeptical about articles like bieber in vogue because how much of the situation is manufactured for an audience that is, at this current time, asking for and expecting real-ness from celebrities. Easy enough to give people what they want. Again, this reminds me of what we talked about last week concerning Instagram- is using the same types of media that are responsible for destroying these people a good way to combat that image and effect real change in the way we view mental illness? Or is a vogue article just another dopamine high? Time will tell. But really, if anything in these articles is even half true, I am with you JB. Take care of yourself because you come from a place people like me can barely even imagine the experience itself or the consequences.

Depression is an all-consuming state, and though it’s 2019 and we have come a long way since bleeding people or removing their brains; unfortunately there is still a lot of stigma, misconceptions and misunderstanding surrounding the term. Bieber publicly speaking about his challenges will open the discussion about mental health, and perhaps normalize the condition and prompt people to seek treatment before it's too late. Mental health has always been considered taboo, it took Mariah Carey years to get diagnosed with Bipolar disorder and then go public with it. Though as a society we are better informed, there is still a long way to go, and though many people are open to starting the conversation others are still serving as an obstacle. When Netflix premiered 13 reasons why there was a lot of backlash but parents and children do need to pay attention and aware of these possibilities, so perhaps Bieber can be another chess piece in making society a bit more aware and conscientious.

Depression alone is such an extensive topic to talk about, let alone when it is mixed with fame, money and role models for society. Justin Bieber has been in the spotlight for most of his life, just thinking of that, I cant imagine for myself. He had to endure one of the most brutal personal media attacks. At some point people were requesting the President of the US to deny his visa, which is a pretty huge statement and clear message of hate towards someone and we have to remember he was just a teenager entertaining people around the world. It doesnt surprise me he thinks “everyone is out to get him” because sometimes, it does seem that way. That is a good enough reason for him to have difficulty establishing strong meaningful relationships and to doubt the ones he had at the moment. He is currently being followed by over 100 million people on instagram alone, the power he has with that platform is immense so I really respect him choosing his health and letting everyone know it is ok to ask for help, to not be ok every now and then and to want to get better and needing the help of others. We should applaud celebrities that are this transparent with us amid all the attack they had to endure from fans and media. No one is safe from falling into depression, no money or fame will ever change this and that is something our children should be very aware of.
